The fifth dimension, we define as the communication of the cells with each other: the critically determined shape and size of the microwells create an environment that is as physiological as possible. Plus, a special nanocoating hinders cells from attaching to the surface. This results in the formation of uniform spheroids with an undisturbed communication of the cells with each other, preventing wrong signals that would induce unwanted gene expression/differentiation.

The Sphericalplate 5D (SP5D) is a 3D cell culture plate for the formation of uniform, and size-controlled spheroids in high quality and yield. It also allows you to effortlessly scale up and further expand into translational research or diagnostic. When developing the SP5D, the goal was to create an environment mimicking physiological conditions by growing standardized spheroids with the possibility of cell-to-cell communication without external interfering signals. Simultaneously, it increases the reproducibility of subsequent tests, as you always start your experiments with identical initial conditions due to the low size variance of the cultured cell spheroids.
The automatability and scalability are discerning key features for the Sphericalplate 5D, which is also essential in future therapeutic applications. The SP5D includes a patented pyramidal geometry and microwell design to have defined angles, rounded bottoms, and sharp borders. This allows the formation of highly regular spheroids with predictive size at the bottom of wells. The combination of these design features is beneficial for biological fidelity and cell-to-cell communication. Furthermore, the specific geometry centers the spheroids and supports the predictability of the position of the spheroids within the well. In addition, the platform material COC is the best material available on the market for high-quality imaging and optical analysis.
Working with the ready-to-use SP5D is particularly user-friendly, so you will quickly get familiar with the handling of your new platform: The cultivation does not require any pre-treatment or centrifugation steps after seeding your cells. Changing the media is also particularly convenient by simple pipetting, as the height of the microwells has been designed to retain cell spheroids.
